Love of Learning

I took the VIA Signature Strengths Questionnaire last night for the Authentic Happiness book club reading. Once again, "love of learning" came out as my signature strength.

I don't want to whine (too much), but how is "love of learning" a strength? In my mind it doesn't compare to a strength like courage, for example. It doesn't seem to benefit the rest of the world in the same way.

Tina, I believe that "love of learning" is the strength that is "sine qua non" -- the thing without which nothing else can occur. What good is courage if you don't know what you're doing while making a "courageous" effort at something? Eli Weisel once said that the people who become good teachers are the ones who loved being students, that is, those who loved to learn. Being a good leader is no different from being a good teacher. If you haven't thoroughly learned either the subject you are about to teach or the area in which you are about to lead, then you are simply one of the "blind leading the blind." One of the things I have always admired about you is your love of learning and openness to the new. Don't discount the value of these attributes. They are indeed your strengths.

Mary,

You make a good point. As my mentor and friend, I cherish your thoughts and words.

I suppose I wish my "mission" as a learner and emergent leader were clearer to me, but I am trusting that it will be revealed when I am ready to take on the responsibility.

Hugs,

Tina
